I discovered toasties as an exchange student in Holland almost 20 years ago. After a long day of sailing or playing hockey, I was grateful for something warm. And, it was a treat. Something you didn’t make at home.
For me, toasties are emblematic of the culture. When you are out and about, you eat a sandwich. A quick, easy sandwich. Two slices of bread and cheese. Not meant to be a meal; just a quick snack to tide you over.
